Festspelen i Piteå - Yusuf Suleiman

Yusuf sings traditional Uyghur folk music and it is something that he has not been able to practice freely. The Uyghur minority is subjected to constant oppression in China. This forced Yusuf Suleiman to flee China to Turkey in 2016, but he also experienced threats there. He is now a sanctuary artist in Piteå and studies music at Framnäs Folk High School and learns Swedish at SFI.

 

My voice and my music are my weapons to fight against oppression, says Yosuf.

Tonight we hear him together with guitarist Tommy Lakso.
