Swedish for Immigrants, SFI, is a basic education in the Swedish language for adults with a native tounge other than Swedish.
All immigrants from age 16 without basic skills in the Swedish language, who are registered in the municipality, are entitled to participate in SFI.
If you are under 20, you are primarily referred to the language introduction program of the upper secondary school (Strömbackaskolan).
SFI studies are free of charge and can be combined with other courses or a part-time job. SFI studies do not qualify for student aid.
Courses
You will be placed in the correct course depending on your former studies and your current knowledge of Swedish. After each completed course you get a certificate.
Schedule
Full time studies
Full time studies include 15 hours of class per week, Monday through Friday.
Hours may vary, but you start no earlier than 8:30 AM and finish no later than 3:30 PM.
You will receive your schedule during your first week of school.
Part time studies
For those who work and are used to studies, there are flexible classes where you come to school at least once a week.
We offer evening classes once a week, Wednesdays between 5 PM and 7 PM (not during July and August).
Part time studies require a level of Swedish corresponding to SFI course C and basic computer skills.

BankID, e-mail address and Swedish personal number are required for online application.

Are you an EU/ EEA citizen or a citizen of Switzerland with right of residence and living in Piteå, but not registered in the municipality?
Contact a guidance counselor (studie- och yrkesvägledare) at Vuxenutbildningen, since you cannot use the online application.
You will need to attach a copy of your passport and documents proving the right of residence with your application.

Swedish as a second language
SFI has different levels and an individual study pace. After finishing SFI you can continue your studies with Swedish as a second language at a basic level, and then continue studying at upper secondary level. You can combine your studies in Swedish with other courses.
