The Municipal Council is the highest decision-making body of the municipality. It could be called Piteå’s “parliament”. It is responsible for making all general decisions.
This mainly involves operating objectives and guidelines, the municipal tax rate, charges and fees, major investments and planning. It also includes the budget – the municipal authority’s most important means of control. There are 51 seats on the Municipal Council. The seats are allocated in proportion to the number of votes each party gains in the local elections every fourth year.
