The Archipelago
The currents of the sea and the roaring of the waves are what separates the archipelago from the mainland, but is also what binds the islands and the water into a network. This is where you experience the distinctive character and tranquillity of Norrland.
Piteå archipelago is unique, even when seen from a broader perspective. The combination of the retreating sea, the brackish water environment, largely unexploited areas, the shallow sea and beach areas, provide very special conditions for plant- and animal life. The islands in the archipelago are often oriented NW-SE, due to the direction the glaciers retreated when they melted 11,500 years ago. The archipelago reaches all the way to the town centre with harbours in the north, south and east.
