In the heart of Piteå lies Sweden's oldest pedestrian street, stretching from Rådhustorget to Lillbrogatan. The pedestrian street was officially opened in 1961 and has been a car-free zone since September 10th of the same year. Today, the pedestrian street is heated, ensuring that it remains snow-free throughout the year. On Storgatan in Piteå, you will find Rådhustorget, which, along with Stora torget in Uppsala, is one of Sweden's two preserved 17th-century squares with enclosed corners. In 1829, the current town hall was built, and its architecture is regionally influenced and inspired by the Finnish-Russian timber empire on the other side of the Bothnian Bay. You will find Piteå Museum in the Town Hall, where they showcase a basic exhibition of what Piteå looked like in the late 1800s in miniature form.

At the end of the street, you can see our hospital where the public dental service is also located. Next to the hospital is one of our high schools, Strömbackaskolan, offering a wide range of programs. In central Piteå, there are also schools for children of all ages. There, you have walking distance to both the beach, the city, and the nature right behind your caravan door. Central Piteå offers plenty of the beautiful nature we have in the north. Badhusparken is a perfect place for families and friends to socialize, with a playground for the children.
Doesn't Piteå always dance and smile? At least at the end of July, when the entire Piteå comes together on Sundsgatan, which has been renovated with carousels, games, food, entertainment by famous artists, and an abundance of tourists who also want to experience Piteå's foremost and second-largest event. But, Piteå Summer Games are even bigger. In June, football teams from over several different nations come. Since the 1990's, around 40 different nations have participated, and Piteå's tourism level rises to around 38,000 visitors during the tournament, nearly doubling the city's population. On Piteå Summer Games' official website, they write: "When people describe Piteå Summer Games, they often highlight the unique opening parade, the midnight sun matches, and how the people of Piteå are world-class when it comes to hospitality. Piteå Summer Games is organized by eight associations active within the Piteå municipality and generates approximately 2.5 million Swedish kronor for local sports annually."
In central Piteå, there are two grocery stores within walking distance, approximately 350 meters apart. Stora Coop is located at Hamnplan 41, and Ica Kvantum is located at Hamnplan 7. At Coop and Ica, you can find all the different grocery products you might need.
